| Jewish Vocational Service helps individuals and businesses achieve their employment goals by providing the skills necessary for success in todays workplace. Individuals making the transition into new work environments benefit from JVS career and employment counseling, job placement, English instruction and occupational skills training programs. JVS is a non-sectarian, not-for profit corporation founded in 1973. JVS is a nationally recognized innovator in workforce development, and plays a leadership role in collaborative employment and training efforts throughout San Francisco. Transgender Economic Empowerment Initiative (TEEI) is the first ever coordinated employment program for the transgender and gender-nonconforming community. TEEI links transgender, genderqueer, and gender-nonconforming community members with employers, provides support for job seekers and newly placed employees, and works to increase the trans-friendliness of San Francisco workplaces. TEEI is a unique collaborative program providing tools to empower individuals towards financial self-sufficiency and matching dynamic people with sustainable job in safe workplaces. Under the direct supervision of the TEEI Program Coordinator and in close collaboration with the Community Programs Manager, Director of Client Services, Client Services team members, The LGBT Center, Transgender Law Center, SFTEAM, and Employers, the Employment Specialist provides job search and placement assistance to TEEI clients. Position Summary: Responsibilities: Employment Counseling/Job Search & Placement Assistance: Provides job search and placement assistance to TEEI clients and follow-up services to placement, maintaining contact with supervisors and clients for up to 12 months. Makes appropriate job referrals and assists with the job match. Assesses clients occupational skills and interests as they pertain to the local job market and assists them in setting and reaching appropriate employment objectives. Provides career, vocational and employment counseling, and assists in the development of an Employment Action Plan by determining clients educational and professional qualifications and transferable skills. Assists clients in identifying appropriate short and long-term employment objectives; maps out strategies for reaching employment objectives; provides corresponding job development; and supports the client throughout the job search. Arranges for participant support services as necessary: counseling, crisis intervention, childcare, transportation, medical/dental services, access to JVS Technology Access Center, and employment workshops. Workshop Facilitation and Classroom Instruction: Coordinates and facilitates job search workshops tailored specifically for transgender community members. Workshops cover a variety of topics including: resume and cover letter writing; completing employment applications; interviewing skills; networking skills; effective workplace communication; and others. Coordinates and conducts individual and group instruction through demonstration, lecture, guest speakers, cooperative learning activities and other modalities of teaching which address learning style differences and potential learning disabilities. Employer Account Management: Identifies employer organizations with potential growth. Performs research to identify employment trends and opportunities and communicates the information to clients and team members. Performs ongoing outreach to employers. Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with several employers. Promotes JVS and TEEI services to prospective sector employers and community groups. Assists employers to assure the successful integration of workers into the workforce, which may include working with the Transgender Law Center and other collaborative partners to arrange sensitivity training. Community Relations and Coordination: Acts as a liaison among JVS, employers, and other collaborative entities including community based non-profit organizations serving transgender community members. Builds partnerships with other JVS staff and collaborative agencies. Represents JVS and TEEI in related community forums and at networking events. Makes referrals to collaborative organizations and programs including the SF LGBT Community Centers Mentor Program, the Transgender Law Center, SFTEAM, and others. Collaborates closely with staff at the SF LGBT Community Center, Transgender Law Center, and SFTEAM to coordinate TEEI workshops, panels and events. Program Administration Ensures compliance with agency and funding reporting requirements including contract documentation, program statistics, and client case files. Responsible for tracking and reporting client progress and employer engagement activities to MIS department. Maintains participant case records, program data, and other records as needed. Assists in preparation for program audits and monitoring visits. Participates in agency, department and community meetings. Other duties as needed. |
| Job Qualifications |
| Sensitivity and commitment to the transgender community and familiarity with the diversity of transgender identities and experiences are required. Experience working with the transgender community is preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, patience, diplomacy, and high level of customer service skills. Excellent cross-cultural communication skills and the ability and willingness to work with economically and culturally diverse clientele. Excellent presentation skills, including networking and public speaking or group facilitation. Excellent writing skills. Well organized, ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet program objectives. Detail-oriented and able to complete paperwork accurately and in a timely manner. Continuous commitment to improving occupational knowledge. Computer proficient in MS Office or similar program, understanding of concept of relational database, competent in using Internet and excellent research abilities. Experience providing services to adults with barriers to employment, such as employment counseling, job development, and placement with persons from various professional backgrounds, is preferred. B.A./B.S degree in a related field preferred. |
