Nursing Refresher Programs

San Francisco Program

JVS in collaboration with the City College of San Francisco (CCSF) offers a 17-week, 4 day/week training program for Licensed Vocational and Registered Nurses, trained in the United States or abroad, who need a refresher course to reenter the field. This is a successful 20-year program offered in collaboration between JVS, CCSF’s Vocational Nursing Program, and local medical facilities.

The program offers:
  • Theoretical practice & clinical experience at City College of San Francisco, San Francisco General Hospital and Laguna Honda Hospital
  • General support completing the course (individualized coaching & referral to resources)
  • Job placement assistance – we’ll help you get your first or next Nurse job!

You can participate in this program if you have:

  • CA LVN or RN license (valid or expired)
  • Valid authorization to work in the U.S.
  • A CCSF ESL level of 150 or above (if a non-native English speaker)
  • Valid American Heart Association CPR (BLS for Healthcare Providers)
  • Ability to provide clear and current medical exams and immunization records.

Nursing Refresher course will run from January 21 – May 20, 2014.

(First 3 weeks all spent in classroom at CCSF).

* Indicates time in clinical assignment. The clinical rotation at Laguna Honda Hospital (LHH) is 6:45am-3:00pm. The clinical rotation at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) is 2:00pm-10:30pm. Each rotation lasts 7 weeks. The February 10, 2014, class will be split into 2 groups; one group going to SFGH and the other going to LHH. In 7 weeks, these 2 groups will switch, each group rotating to the other hospital site.

East Bay Program

Immigrant Nurse Re-entry Program (INRP)
In collaboration with Chabot College and Alameda Health System, JVS offers a 10-week training program for foreign-educated nurses who are not currently employed as RNs.

The INRP will include:
• A 1 unit RN refresher course with 48 didactic hours and 188 skills lab and clinical hours.
• Access to clinical rotations, some with a preceptor model.
• Individualized coaching and referral to resources.
• Job search and placement assistance.

Dates: June 2, 2014 – August 10, 2014 (subject to change)

Location: Chabot College (Hayward, CA) and Highland Hospital (Oakland, CA)

Program Eligibility:
• East Bay resident (strongly preferred)
• RN license from another country and from California
• Proof of authorization to work in U.S.
• ESL level of high-intermediate
• Valid American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider certification
