Maintenance Trades Internships in the Water Sector

About the Program

Experience the work environment of a Maintenance Mechanic, Maintenance Machinist, Electrician, or Instrumentation Tech at a Bay Area water/wastewater agency. Learn to work safely and responsibly while shadowing and assisting tradespeople as they inspect and repair various mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and instrumentation systems to ensure efficient operation.

Program Details

  • This program is 6 months to 1 year with a paid internship at Bay Area water and wastewater agencies.
  • You may be eligible for assistance with tuition, books, transportation, and safety equipment costs.
  • Post-internship job placement services and referrals to job openings with Bay Area agencies are available.

Eligibility

  • Must be a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and interested in securing meaningful employment with opportunities for economic growth.
  • Must be able to provide a U.S. high school diploma, GED, or equivalency with translation.
  • Should have a valid authorization to work in the United States, such as U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or an employment authorization card.
  • Completion of at least one semester of either Process Technology (PTEC) Water Treatment or Wastewater Operator programs at a Bay Area Community College, relevant formal apprenticeship, relevant military training, or private trades training program. Equivalent work experience may be considered to satisfy the education requirement.
  • Must enroll in community college trades program related to maintenance and operations at a water facility.
  • Must have a valid CA driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Must have the physical characteristics to learn and perform tasks including lifting and carrying tools and equipment weighing 50 lbs. or more.
  • Given the work is in industrial settings, the candidate must be willing to work outdoors and in inclement weather.
  • Must provide proof of Selective Services registration (males only).
  • Must be available and present for the entire duration of the program.
