About the Program
JVS’s RDA Advancement program helps working Dental Assistants take the next step in their career and move confidently toward California RDA licensure. JVS provides certificate-completion support, personalized coaching, and structured exam preparation to help DAs meet licensure requirements and successfully prepare for — and pass — the state exam.
Program Details
- This program is for Dental Assistants with at least 15 months and 1,280 hours of experience
- This program offers structured pathways that reflect where Dental Assistants are in the RDA exam process and what steps remain
- Online coaching and instruction are paired with in-person clinical components completed through each participant’s local, CA Dental Board-approved providers
- Program length typically ranges from 3-6 months and is designed to support steady progress toward RDA exam completion and career advancement
Eligibility
- Open to California residents
- Must be 18 years of age or older and interested in securing meaningful employment with opportunities for economic growth
- Should have a valid authorization to work in the United States, such as U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or an employment authorization card
- Must have worked as a Dental Assistant for at least 15 months and 1,280 hours
- Submit copies of certificates required to take the exam
- Must be available for the entire duration of the program
- Must be committed to finding work as an RDA after receiving their license

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be working in a dental office to join?
No. If you are working in an office, we will ask whether your employer knows you’re pursuing your RDA and whether you plan to pursue an RDA role in the office.
How long does the program take to complete?
Most participants take 3–6 months, depending on their level of readiness to take the exam.
Do I have to pay for any missing certificates upfront?
JVS supports participants with certificate costs through reimbursement. Required certificate training is completed through California Dental Board–approved providers, with reimbursement provided after successful completion in accordance with JVS guidelines.
Can I enroll if I’m missing all my certificates?
Yes. If you are missing multiple certificates, additional time is usually needed. Applying early allows JVS to assess readiness and place you on the appropriate entry path.
What if I experience test anxiety?
We understand – test anxiety is common, and support is built into the program. JVS provides one-on-one coaching and ongoing exam preparation to help participants build confidence and feel prepared.
What happens if my employer doesn’t promote me after I pass?
If your employer cannot advance you, JVS will provide additional job search support to help you secure an RDA role elsewhere.
Is placement guaranteed?
No. Placement is not guaranteed, but we offer dedicated job placement support.
The tuition and fees of this program is $3,200 per person, but is no charge for participants thanks to our generous supporters.
