Billy completed the JSA program in 2024.
After working in nonprofits and helping a friend run his business through the pandemic, Billy was ready for a new chapter. He became a full-time student to complete his B.A. in Economics and open doors to career opportunities in city, county, and community-based organizations that required a four-year degree. “I didn’t want barriers to limit me anymore,” Billy shares. “So I committed to finishing my degree.”
As a student at San Francisco State University, Billy discovered a love of behavioral economics. “I love data and critical thinking, but also how economics helps explain people’s choices and social behavior. It’s a social science that connects to everything.”
When he joined the JVS Job Search Accelerator (JSA) cohort in late 2024, Billy found not only new skills but also a strong community. “The support system surprised me,” he says. “Even online, I felt connected. It gave me structure, accountability, and a place to show up.” He especially valued the resume workshops and employer practice interviews, which helped him build confidence and learn to talk about his strengths.
After months of persistence and a few temporary roles, Billy landed a full-time position as an HR Advisor: Recruitment & Learning with the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, where he now supports hiring and onboarding. “It’s a great fit. I love working in a nonprofit again and helping people through the full cycle of employment,” he says. “Many of our staff move up internally, and it’s rewarding to be part of that growth.”
Looking ahead, Billy hopes to expand his HR skills into benefits and compensation and eventually pursue a master’s degree. “I’m a lifelong learner,” he says. “JVS helped me remember that growth doesn’t stop.”
To jobseekers considering the JSA program, Billy says they should go for it. “Take the leap. You’ll gain community, focus, and confidence—and you’ll thank yourself for it.”
